That's the first photo I have seen of Rev.Gerard.He looks a handsome young man in his younger days. When he looked at you with his piercing eyes he seemed to know what your thoughts were. Some of my old school mates will like this photo,Ron.
The Rev. Richard Tebbs (top right) was a bit of a character.
He only entered the church after serving 12 years as a Private in the Indian Army.
I should imagine his military training came in handy down late 19th/early 20th century Wallgate.
Thank you so much, Ron, for all the photos connected to St Thomas's.
Dave, Jean, this is a cracking photo. All I could remember of Rev.Gerrard was his grey hair, and the way he walked. To me, as a kid, he seemed to be a very old man.Like a lot of other people I would like to sit and have a cup of tea and a chat with, he is near the top of my list
Harry, Dave. I agree that this is a wonderful photo. It is ths first time I have seen a photo of Rev Tebbs who married my grandparents. Rev Gerrard married my parents and he would definitely be near the top of my list too. I don't remember when Rev Gerrard retired but it must have been in the late 50's, after which a Rev Dupre came to St Thomas's but he didn't stay for very long.
Mick, do you have any other info about Rev Tebbs?
I'm doing some work on my Gt Harwood site and have come across two burials at St Batholomew's
28 November 1887 Arthur Oswald Tebbs Abode: 4 Pitt Street Wigan Age: 22 months - Son of Richard Tebbs (Curate of Saint Thomas's Wigan)
6 May 1887 Louis Beaumont Tebbs Abode: Mary Street Rishton Age: 2 - Son of Richard Tebbs (Curate of Rishton)
Tebbs isn't a common name and not one I've come across before so seems likely the two curates were related.
