Councillor R.Milner, Mrs. Milner and Mr John Marsden, Clerk, lead the parade back to Hindley. The background is of interest. The railway line is the Whelley loop line and behind it the slag heaps, now removed and the area reclaimed. In the far distance, Westwood Power Station cooling towers. To the right of the slag heaps is the skyline of Ince and Wigan although I am unsure as to the identity of the large building and the chimneys.

I think it could well be Empress Mill at Rose bridge.

You don't get views like that nowadays!

The buildihg, and the adjoining chimney may be Ince Forge, if it was still in existence in 1963.

Ive lived in Platt Bridge all my life but I cant remember the slag heaps shown on the photo,I dont even remember any colleries over there, the nearest pit to there was Cromptons and that was at the back of Cromptom St.miles away.the location of the slag heaps looks like where the old rubber dump used to be.
I believe the slag heaps were called Bullet hill, because you could dig up bullets and polish them up. I spent many happy hours doing this as a child. They were removed I think in the sixties.
