This looks eerily familiar!
Did the GPO, (Post Office Telephones, as it then was) about half a century ago, have their Engineers' Stores behind where the photographer must be standing, and a few yards off in the Wigan direction?
I don't think so but am happy to be corrected. I was born quite near to this spot in 1952 and lived there until 1971 and don't recall that at all.
I believe a Mr Kay, had a butcher's shop, in this locallity. His brother had a butcher's shop in Goose Green.
the engineers store you are thinking of were quite near to Rose bridge....see the telegraph pole in the centre? walk left up that road about 200 yards and its on your right
The post office telephones compound was behind Varty's,where the Rose Bridge ground is.
I put a photo on here of Little Darlington street with my wife and my mother, the post office engineers yard is shown behind them.
Where can I find your pic of Little Darlington Street?
Now realise that although finding it familiar, I had flipped the orientation of it in my memory: strange!
So now that I realise that photo is looking at Manchester Road, and not taken from Manchester Road, then it will be straight on in the direction we are facing, and by the canal: is that right?
AP, I will post the photo again on places, the yard is not fully shown, but straight behind my mother and my wife is part of the yard, to the left was the Crown Pub which at that time was still there.
Got it.
Thanks Aitch.
There was also a British Telecomm stores on Rose Bridge at the junction of Manchester road and Old Hall ave.
Photo's obviously taken from the front of what is now Salters chemist in Ince Green Lane. The old white houses in Smithy Green were replaced by Kentucky and other shops. I can also see a place I used to dread...The barbers. As a kid I hated having a haircut!

just look at this photo absolutly full of character and memories, and yeah the pic was taken from round the chemist area opposite jack poslthwaites butchers. i grew up further down the ince green an remember it well
Bill, I think the barber was called Ken..he had a clubbed foot. I hated it too...short back and sides.
