The Walkers sign over the "Dog I'th Hatch" pub, & across the road, the N W Electric Board Showrooms

The Electric showrooms on the right and the church were demolished around 1970 along with the row of shops, they were replaced with the shops where Poundworld is now. The Dog I'th Thatch was demolished in the later 70s.

A much nicer view back then than the faceless, characterless, buildings that replaced them.

I would place this about 1959/60. It appears that what was originally the C&A store (Now Primark) is under construction. Does anyone remember the last shop on Standishgate before the Electricity Showrooms - The Gate Cafe?

The site now occupied by Primark was previously Shearegold's antiques and pianos. Along this stretch was The Famous Army Store (rumoured to be haunted) Laces confectioners ,further along Hunter's chemist .

We used to use the "Gate" Cafe as a meeting place, with the lovely "Green" Sisters keeping us supplied with Coffee etc Rita, Alma, Lillian & (?)the last name escapes me :o(
Then across the road to the White horse for a pint..;o)
A very friendly place it was.
BTW,Hunters Chemist was on the Market Place near Bakers Jewel Casket. I believe that the old bay window frontage was preserved at the Pier bygone days exhibition
