This is a really interesting photo for me.
On the 1851 census my Grt Grandmother Ann Gaskell aged 7yrs is shown living at 62 Far Moor with her Mother Alice & sister Elizabeth. Alice's occupation was a shopkeeper. At No 65 there was a pub, The Rose & Crown, I should think thats long gone. Thanks for showing the pic Duncan.
Helen, was it you who commented on my other Orrell photo (church Street 1987, Wilkinson's chemist etc.) If it was take another look at that photo, you will see the Rose & Crown, white building at the end of the row of shops. Believe it or not it still exists today!.
not changed much
Duncan, there must be another Helen or it was a New Year hiccup at headquarters! Anyway I have looked at the other photo you mentioned..amazing the pub is still there ! I also looked at the area on Google Earth. Alice Gaskell & her daughters must have lived quite close by the pub. Lots of the old houses & buildings must have gone a while ago but the cottages & shop you showed in another pic are still there. I'll have to go & have a look when I next come up to Wigan.
That's a good photo - where was the infant school in relation to this photo? cheers
Infant school was more or less opposite the white painted wall on bottom left of photo.
The bigger building in the middle with the red lion sign was my grandparents grocers and off licence - Horrocks'. I remember spending lots of time growing up in there!! Thank you for the picture - I don't have one but will be nice to show my children!!
Remember hour rocks shop had two sides. Off licence on the left and groceries on the right. Joe Horrocks never would sell alcohol to me despite me being fifteen and a half!! My sister worked there on Saturdays. Lovely photo
She also worked there Friday nights - all for the princely sum of £2.50. Believe me those cellar steps were very steep and scary and pouring that sherry into customers' own bottles without spilling any was quite a skill!,
My great, great, Grandma was Elizabeth Horrocks(1840-1906). She married John Baldwin in 1860. She was part of the Horrocks Stores family, but was denounced when she married "beneath her status.
I was born on 1943 from when I ca n first remember my nan's brother ran the green grocers and off licence at the at the shop his name was Jack cheetham his wife's name was May three of his daughters lived in the house's attached to it. Uncle Jack had a small holding at the rear which he raised chickens, pigs and turkeys I used to go and help Saturday's and holidays collecting eggs, cleaning the pigs out at Christmas the whole family would go and kill the turkeys and pluck and clean them l can't remember when he retired he died December 1972 he was 72years old.one of his daughters, auntie Marion Sharock lived in the end house up to about 7years ago.
