Would that be Brooklands, the house that the Baxter family lived in ?
My sister Anne went to Upholland Grammar & had a friend there called Yvonne Baxter, who lived in a large house down the road opposite the Lyric Cinema...does anyone know if it is the same house ? Yvonne moved with her family to Devon in the 1960's.
That's correct Helen. Brooklands is on the opposite side of the road to The Lyric and Rock House, and is about halfway between the two.
Yes, it's Brooklands on Parliament Street UpHolland. Still a private house though Baxter's have not lived there for many years.
Helen, I think the house Yvonne Baxter lived in was down Lafford lane, and was Holland House. That was on my Christmas mail delivery route one year.
Thanks Ellen, you jogged my memory. I think you mentioned that when we were all ' talking ' about bygone Christmases some while ago.
i lived at Brooklands, the Baxters lived at the Tontine end of Church Street.
Yes, that is Brooklands, my Great-grandfather, James Baxter lived there with his large family. I do not know when they moved in but we have a family wedding photo taken in front of the house approx date 1921. We also have a family photo of my Great-grandparents and their family of ten boys and two daughters which we believe to be taken in Brooklands garden. My Grandfather, Maurice and three of his brothers are in uniform. This photo will have been taken pre 1915 as two of the brothers in uniform were killed Jan 1915. My Greatgrandfather died in 1940 and I guess the house went out of the family about that time. The Baxters who lived in Church Street, my cousins, John and Stephen, lived at Stoneleigh with my widowed Granny, Margaret Baxter (nee Barton). My father, Arnold Baxter was married from here 9th Sept 1952 to Doreen Mills. As a family we lived at 2 Parliament Street above the grocery and off licence. I now live in Broughty Ferry, Dundee. I have three sons, Thomas, Oliver and William.
