Wigan War Memorial Unveiled. Scanned from an old postcard.
Note that the 1800 names were inscribed upon stone tablets in this view taken after the unveiling and dedication of the Memorial on Saturday, October 17th, 1925. The tablets were soon replaced with cast bronze plaques when erosion from Wigan's atmosphere eroded the inscriptions.
The original plan was that the names should not be part of the Memorial, but should be inscribed on vellum, and displayed in the Public Library.
