Very well known in certain circles?

Is that house next to the pub the one which became quite reknowned has it was reputed to be haunted by George Lyon the highwayman, or did the haunted house stand where the pub is?

The house next to the pub was the Haunted House or it was next door to that, Anyway it was similar to this one. But it wasn't George Lyon who was supposed to have haunted it. After a few enquiries it was decided the 'Hauntings' were by two mischievous children who lived in the house

Was known as a pub popular with Gays in the days before gayness was acceptable, and we thought of "gay" as meaning bright colours, or "happy".

You can tell this is years ago there are no bushes in the church yard.

The house to the right of the pub on the photo was the ghost house, the pub looks very much the same now but the ghost house was pulled down around 1930, the church gate and railings were removed in the late 1960s when the road was widened.

Does anyone recall a story of the licensee, James Dickinson, serving a pint though a hole in the wall to the ghost of George Lyons? It may have been in a local paper at the time?

Tammy why have you put your question on here? This is Upholland not Wigan I suggest you put the question in the Wigan section under Wrightington St. or Swinley.

Tammy, I've just seen your post about 6 Wrightington Street, Swinley, Wigan. The house was once the Vicarage for the church of St George on Water Street, Wigan, the last vicar residing there was Rev. Bernard Harrison and his family, and as for it being haunted, I very much doubt there being any truth at all in the rumour.
There was during the 1970's and 1980s a vicar in the area who did have a glass eye and he was the vicar of St Michael & All Angels on Duke Street Wigan, though he retired to Chorley and died soon after, he was Rev. Charles Walker, and he'd lost his eye during WWll.

After Bernard retired St George's Parish came under Wigan All Saints, with the Rector, Ray Hutchinson, as its Priest-in-Charge. After the retirement of Canon Malcom Forrest, it was decided by Liverpool Diocese that the Rectory, Wigan Hall, required too much repair work for it to continue to serve as the Rectory. St George's Vicarage became the Rectory for All Saints when Ray was appointed.

Can anyone please tell me more about the “ghost house”. My dad currently has the pub and i’m eager to know more about what used to stand next to it. I always wonder if anything passed over/moved into the pub since it was knocked down.
