Oh, to be able to do a "Gary Sparrow" and go back for just another peep!
Me too, Irene. If I had known they were going to pull it down I think I would have chained myself to the shutters...lol. In York they would have made a great feature of something like that. I'm sure the 'planners' ... and I use that term loosely, are not Wiganers.....If you are reading this... shame on you for what you are doing to our once proud Ancient and Loyal Borough...
The Old Arcade has so many memories - I can still see Syd Smith at the bottom with the "weigh-man" I agree about the planners - they should be shot - this was part of the old Wigan - should have been kept.
How you diddlin Pete....Not seen you for ages.....Bob
There used to be a shop which sold strings of toffee-bags and my Mam would buy me a string of the three-cornered ones to play "shops" with. The same shop used to sell loose fireworks in the Autumn, from a box outside the door.....can you imagine that today?! My Mam was once mortified in Gorner's cafe when they took me in for a drink and my Dad asked for three beers instead of three cups of tea...I can still see her nudging him and saying "Ee, Bob"!..."What's Up?", said Dad, completely oblivious of what he'd done...He must have thought he was in the Legs of Man pub! Oh, the memories this site brings back!
I used to shop in the Arcade with my Mum in the early 50's. We would often go to Gorners and I would read my newly acquired copy of Sunny Stories or the latest Ladybird book. Someone once a relative what s different about a Manx cat and she said it had 3 legs!
