Newtown Bridge, 1954. The area was prone to flooding for many years. Something that may no longer be a problem due to recent works.

Another great pic!
The young girl seems to be making the most of it with a pair of wellies on. Can see the Seven Stars through the bridge and looking at it these days, ready for the demolition men

They spent ££££££££££'s on the new flood defences and it still flooded last year & closed the road :-(

55 years on and the bridge is still the same width causing a bottleneck for traffic. Did the planners modernise the wrong bridge.? they spent a fortune on chapel lane bridge just to move the traffic jam 220 yards!

Seems nothing has changed still flooding will the new road be flooded as well
My grandparents lived in a house on the right beyond the bridge my dad and his brothers used to jump into the canal basin from ( bank's) wigan pier
