Photograph of the Old Dog Inn, side entrance at Christmas 1902. This was one of Wigan's most historical hostelries.( So of course the council demolished it) The landlord at the time was Harry Jolley. On the notice board by the door the proprietors present their compliments of the season to all their customers. The board also lists the names of artists appearing during the Christmas festivities. They were; Harry Wray, Jimmy Bowman, and Jackson and Messenger.

What a treasure. I lived in Wigan from 1941 to 1967 and now live in the Midlands, well to be honest near Wolverhampton and a few miles away lies the Black Country Museum (although technically Wolverhampton itself does not lie in the Black Country - something to do with coal seams etc.,) If the Old Dog was in their area they would have snapped it up and brought it brick by brick to resurrect it at the Museum. Sadly of course our appreciation of our working class history comes 50 to 100 years too late for jewels like this.

This picture is wonderful. I believe that this Inn was run by my family as I am descended from a Jolley from Wigan .... My great-grandmother is listed as residing here for the 1901 census but she was only 9 years old at the time.
