There was a pub., in the old Bottling Wood, I think it was called The Woodmans, can anyone confirm that?.
I have just started researching my family tree and this has led me to the census for the Marsden family living in Bottling Wood at the time of the 1911 census - at number 7. My paternal grandmother was May Brown (nee Marsden) - she is younger and isn't on the census but her older siblings, Miriam and Samuel are there with their parents Miriam and William.
Any connections? Are these houses still standing?
Hi Tom, there was a pub in Bottling Wood called The Woodsman, you are correct. One of my fathers relatives was the landlord. When his parents got married they had their reception there and the bridal car came down the hill and the brakes failed. Therefore the bride and groom had to wade through the River Douglas to get back to dry land and their wedding reception.
My mother's family, Barton, lived in Bottling Wood, in the early 20th Century. She said it was her grandma's house. I took her there about 30 years ago but it had all gone. I have some photos.
My great grandmother Mary Elizabeth Grimshaw lived at no 34 Bottling Wood with her parents in 1861, aged 11 and subsequently an orphan she then went to live with her aunt and uncle George and Mary Turner at no 57 Bottling Wood.
