This is how I remember it and I loved the fair.....the only way I could get a goldfish with the darts chucked at the playing cards....good job my Dad was a good aim.....thank you... ;-)
British cars and one VW....Oh and Wigan Square, the way we were.
Smith's Tours office in the background on Market Street I remember waiting for a coach on the Market Square, going on a Sunday coach trip with Smith's. Happy Days!
well the council certainly did a very good job, lousing up our town centre
The Chinese restaurant Pacific Ocean. Three course meal in 1970 was 5/-
Would that be the lunchtime special Gerry?
Yes Keene it was the lunchtime special price.. My boss used to take me there on Fridays .once a lady on the next table asked her companion. " is this the Pacific Ocean". My gaffer under his breath said. " aye and this is queen Mary were on too". It made me laugh all afternoon. I still remember that comment forty years later..
Liz; Did you go in the black pea saloon at Wigan Fair?
Hi Ernest .....in all honesty can't say that I did....maybe my parent's did..cheers!!!
Liz; My sister, seven years older than I and her friends, wouldn`t go inside the black pea saloon - it was below their dignity.
I can remember the black pea stall at Wigan Fair, it was a canvas tent like structure with forms along the inside where the customers sat while they ate. Outside the tent the backsides of some customers could be seen bulging through the canvas and some daring kids would give them a whack!
Who remembers the greasy pole with ten bob on top of it..you had to swarm up the pole to get it..but because it was greasy. Not many did
I remember the black pea stall being at the corner of the square that the photo is showing.
