Although the floods were devastating to families, when Ince brook overflowed like this, the kids had a ball. It seems they still had their school clothes on!!I believe this photo was in the Wigan Observer some years ago.

I remember East View, (Can Row), from my childhood.....the houses shown on the right of this photo, but I can't recall the building on the left of the photo. My memories of fishing for "cockies" in Can Row Brook are from the early sixties; would the building on the left have been demolished by then or have I just blotted it out of my memory? A brilliant photo!

The good old days...? I think not!

no irene your memory is fine according to arthur pilkington (see street scenes amberswood terrace/can row) the houses were demolished in 1957 I know that the only ones remaining were the three red brick ones because I lived at number 3 until I was 19 years old.I do remember however the big freeze as it was reported then when after some flooding the whole area was covered in ice , the park lake froze over & graham crook & myself walked across it there was a great yawning crack & we dropped to our knees but kept going and crossed to the other side we vowed never to tell anyone & never to do it again, the ice around ince ponds, waterways etc was at least four inches thick (100mm) we measured six inches(150mm)in some places with our school rulers as we chipped away with our dads hammers , even the canal was frozen. and yes we had to walk across it, we broke our promise, ince lads were either very brave or very stupid in those days,I suspect the latter. but seriously what year was this when ince froze and there was talk of another ice age? nevermind global warming my teeth chattered for five minutes before i got to sleep, workmen in the street had braziers burning as they tried to dig holes in the frozen soil and made me late for school as I watched them with time standing apparently still.happy days.

hi Peter, yes they were happy times, kids made arrangements & kept them,no mobile phones to confirm anything just a promise to be there and we were. Do you visit aus, with your job ? We retired to margaret river about 7 years ago after living in perth for 20 odd years,we had 5 acres of land with a homestead ,we downsized and had a holiday rental in mriver now sold it & just have our townhouse, its like lock & leave, now we travel quite a lot when were not looking after grandkids, but yes it is home and we love it here and were very lucky to have 5 boys to keep us busy, I will say hello to our viv , she is the most popular nana in mriver all the kids love her to bits,ah well off to bed now played golf sat/ sun club champs, buggered now see ya later, tezza.

When we go to melbourne, we will drive down the coast road
Really looking forward to it

Comment by: terry halsall on 10th September 2013 at 13:46

hi peter you will see what remains of the 12 appostles a remarkable sight, rocks jutting out of the southern ocean ,gradually eroding away from the force of the ocean ,try to see the blue lake at mt gambier , and the wine region before adelaide, that would take a couple of days at least though it ,s a bloody big place oz you can never see it all ? but still, (the wide brown land for me) do your best tezza.

I lived at no.5 East View from 1945 to 1956 next door to Terry Halsall or Terrence as we called him''on the other side at no.7 lived Mr.and.mrs.Scotson and their son Thomas, sadly,I heard Thomas passed away several years ago.I have lots of fond memories of Can Row but a lot of not so nice ones, like coming home from school to see our house and several more under2or3feet of water!! I would love to read more comments from anyone else who remembers the Radcliffe's, my Grandma and Grandad lived in Factory Fold which was next to the Park Hotel, which has now been demolished

Comment by: stuartlucas on 9th October 2016 at 13:56

hi terry if look in the gap between the 2 rows of houses , you can see a house in the distance.this house you got to by taking the path to devils tunnel. you could get to it by going down some small stone steps onto a path way which would then take you to the bottom park gate.had it a number or had it a name .

Comment by: Terry Halsall on 15th December 2016 at 09:03

Hi Stuart , I remember the house but nothing else about it sorry , Terry .
