I can't fathom out where this photo was taken. I'm befuddled!
What is the building directly at the back of the tree? Is it Smiths bookshop?

1934granada - Yes, that is the rear of what was Smith's bookshop - now the Heart Foundation Charity Furniture Shop.

That's correct, 1934granada.
If you were standing in more or less the same place today, you would be looking at the monstrosity which is the new market hall instead of the bus station.
