What a lovely, happy photo.....not a designer outfit or fancy trainers in sight, (especially for the little barefooted boy on the far left!), but Mums, children, babies and dogs seem happy and contented with their lot.
Like they say "A SMILE COSTS NOTHING", so why are people so miserable today. a smile costs nothing. It's wonderful to see such a happy picture.
A fabulous picture, full of atmosphere. Would it be 1953 with the union flags on the wall?
We were happy and contented with our lot, in those days, none of us had a telephone, TV or car, so we didn't have a clue there was something other than what we had.. In spite of all that, I still believe our childhoods were far happier than that of the children of today, for many many reasons. Lovely lovely photo.
great photo but is it canal st in ince or wigan
my dad stanley holland was born in canal street.his parents were Annie and Billy. Does anyone remember him?
Look at the poor little lad on the front row left, with no shoes. As has been said by many people before, including myself, Kids then had a "childhood" Innocence was something which alas is no more. Kids today may have more material things but in no way are they as happy as kids then.
Wonderful photo of social history...keep them coming !
its canal st,woodhouse lane
Cliff, are you any relation to Jimmy Aspey? He lived in Beech Hill area in the early 60s....died mid-60s.
I knew Stanlet Holland from Ingram St he had a sister Doreen and two brothers Joe and Jackie.
sorry,,none of my uncles or dad know of jimmy aspey being related,,but they knew him
i recognise billy and john wilson, and freddy aspey.
My wife Margeret (nee Higham) remembers most of the people on the photo. They all used to play street games together--Hop Scotch, they had a big skipping rope ( probably a barge rope) which stretched from one side of the street to the other. Only the grown up kids were able to swing the rope (or as they called it) " Turn up". Skilly 2-4-6-8-10, Hide and seek . Tap latch was the nearest thing they got to asbo's and woh betide anyone who got caught by the local bobby- not that we ever saw one.( a bit like today). They once got caught by the Line cop ( someone who watched over the railway sidings) when they were taking a short cut to the lime pond. He made them walk all the way round and stood there and watched whilst we did as we were told.Happy days.
