This view shows the back of No2 pit bottom.You can clearly see there is no obstruction between the shaft and the pit bottom,the reason being,supplies that had to be slung under the cage (pipes and roof supports longer than the cage is wide etc)would be pulled into the pit bottom mouthing as the cage is slowly lowered.An air hoist can be seen hanging in front of the shaft,this and a haulage engine would have been used to pull the equipment out of the shaft.
