This photo was taken in July 1957 at School Lane level crossing, Standish. The engine is Robin Hill, pulling (20 or 30?) loaded wagons from Robin Hill Drift Mine at Almond Brook to the Gidlow Washery near Beech Hill. The motorcyclist with Army Beret serving as crash helmet waits patiently, the flagmans shadow suggests that it's late afternoon and the two lads look up at the driver and think, that's what I want to do when I leave school!

My dad Norman Taylor was a driver out of Springs Branch in the late 1940s/early 50s and died when I was 5, 1953. Anybody know of him? We lived in a railway cottage in Pemberton.Lots of memories and war info.

A great photo of an area which is a lot different today. Does anyone think the chap on the motorbike looks like he's seeing if he's had any missed messages ? Spooky !!

I remember the track across School Lane and the gates but never saw a train, many thanks for the picture.
The old track from School Lane to Pepper Lane has been tarmacked, I think people refer to it as the Red Path and it is a pleasant walk down behind Standish High School.
