Have you any idea what year the canteen photo was taken.
How many people worked there then?
I think the photo would be taken around 1950.
I can remember being entertained by Jimmy Whelan, (Dave's father).
I think Jimmy's daughter Pauline also sang there.
I remember when I worked there I was told there were about 3000 girls.I dont know if it was true/
My mother in law, Peggy Houghton who lives in Aspull, says the photo was taken about October 1944. Peggy is on the front row at the end on the right, the lady next to her is Molly Bithell who Peggy says is sadly no longer with us. Peggy worked at Eckersleys until about April or May 1947 when she was pregnant with my wife Margaret.

I think my mum Olive Beesley(later Stevenson) worked here.If I have the right venue,I know she also worked at another mill, she told me that Frankie Vaughan played the lunch hour and the girls drifted back to work as he wasn't popular! Does anyone know any more of this story?
Hello. I have only just found this site,My Sister Veronica Eckersley worked at Eckersley/s she had a superb Soprano voice and during the war a programme called Workers Playtime came on the Radio at 12noon for half a hour it came to Eckersleys Mill quite a few times and my Sister would entertain by singing, To hear Her sing AVE MARIA was absolutley gorgeous,Later in life She and Her Husband moved to Blackpool,She passed away some 10 years ago,
i worked at eckerslys in late 40-50,and there was a different singer on every lunchtime and enjoyed them days fondly, their was a george macyntire i think he was a labourer,,but wat i do remember was their home made pasty's with pea soup....mmmmm lovely, can tast it now'..
My mother Mary Mc Cann Later Pemberton worked at Eckersleys Mill from leaving school aged 13 about 1944until she married 1952. she is still alive and living in Hindley. She divorced, remarried James O' Connor (now passed away 2004). I know she would be happy to hear from old friends from this time.
My father was electrician for many years at Eckersleys (Gerry Barton) if anyone remembers??
I remember working with a chap by the name of Barton, but I think he finished and bought a chippie.
