With reference to the 3E bus picture this is great information for me. By 1970 I was almost cured of my 3D bus fear and was happily catching anything with a 3 on it on Ince Bar that was pointed at Hindley to get to school. I don't remember this many 3 buses to Hindley though.

(Interesting to see that that the 3D isn't listed so I presume that it just didn't get back from Ince Green Lane one day!!)

Glad it helped, it was your picture that made me dig the timetable out of the loft to be honest. With regard to the numerous '3B/3C'(and possibly the 3D)routes, these short journeys are not listed on the actual timetables, i assume these were run as extras during busy periods as and when required.

I have a timetable from Sept 1969 and it says that route
3C terminated at Hindley Bird ith Hand and route 3B terminated at Hindley Market St/Ladies Lane as a matter of interest there was also a service 3X to Ince Bar but I never saw it. I have a photo somewhere that shows a bus
on service 3B to Hindley via Wigan from Martland Mill Bridge.When I was at school I used to travel on the 3 to Hindley which terminated at Silverdale Rd on the Castle Hill Estate that was 1970/1971,I only ever remember services 3 3A running to Hindley and services 3D and 3E running to Ince.Hope this is of interset.

The reason theres no 3D INCE service to ince green lane is that in OCT 1970 service 13 to BICKERSHAW was converted to O P O and re routed via ince green lane linking hr ince and lr ince
