RON ; I was taken to the top of the drift in the late fifties, with Tom Lowe who i think was the undermanager , Tom lived on pemberton rd

Whenever we( our gang) walked past the entrance to the mine we would always look down the slope of the mine through the iron gates and wonder how far it went????? Can you imaging these days letting a gang of lads walk around a mine...But then, 50's early 60's. the footpath went straight through the middle of the pit buildings.

Summersales wasn't a pit it was a drift mine.

Great newspaper the Wigan Observer then, with great stories.
I remember this report and many other pits followed in it's footsteps.
