"Jayne's grandfather, Percy Carrington, was police sergeant in Pemberton. Formal photo is Chief Constable Tom Pey with Superintendents, Inspectors and Sergeants in 1936. At Wigan's cricket ground.

Percy Carrington second left on middle row, and furie Wigan Borough Chief Constable Paul Foster is the Sergeant third from left on the back row.
I think this pic may already feature in one of the albums.

At this time these would have been mostly military men. The guys on the beat would have been formidable compared to today's "standards". Respect is taught, nowadays it's a choice.
