The shop to the right with the outline of mainland UK just in sight was Englands. They sold ladies shoes and leather goods if I remember rightly. This was on the former site of a restaurant with black frontage whose name escapes me.
Derek, Rendez-vous café ?
If this photograph was in fact taken in the 1950’s the shop to the right was Nichols. They sold ladies coats and suits. I know this for a fact because my aunt worked there. I think M&S took over the space some time in the latter part of the 1960’s.
On reflection, M&S could have taken the property on the rhs over around 1963/4.
I remember going in there with my aunty in 1954.She was buying me a nice new frock for Easter.Lovley memories.
When this photo was taken the shop on the right was Alexandre tailors. You can see the first three lettrers of their name on the sign above the shop window. I worked there for a very short time in the esrly 1970s, so this photo is most likey later than 1950s.
The England map sign was there from previous occupiers.
Thanks, John for refreshing my memory. It was the Rendezvous café.
