My Mother ( on the right ) and a lady named Hurst on their way to work on the pit brow at J&R Stones Park colliery. Presumably, the basket contained their 'baggin '. C. 1932.

Despite the cumbersome workwear these girls looked very glamorous with their shapely 'pins'! A small group of pit brow lassies would have looked really good sculpted in bronze and placed at the top of Milllgate instead of the dreaded 'head' . It would also have been a good conversational piece.
