I make no apology for bathing in reflected glory in referring to the success of the Wigan Observer, at Woods Street. The GOSS AWARD for (non-heatset web offset):A full colour front page from the Wigan Observer was the winner once again. The newspaper was printed on a CRABTREE spearhead mark 3 machine, using Howson Marathon plates, Ault and Wiborg black and Horsells colour inks and Dantex blankets. The paper is Abitibi 48.8 gsm. All aspects of production were catered for at Woods Street, including colour separations with copyspeed and Magnacolor equipment, using Silver mask and 100-line screen, with no retouching. Typesetting was with compugraphic machines in century and univers. The Wigan Observer continued winning more Photo-Litho and Offset commendations up to the closure of Woods Street in 1984.

I remember the Wigan Observer, it stood out more than any other paper, I use to deliver them when I was a paper-boy in the late 60s, it always seem much better quality than the evening and daily papers...
