Derrick Smith (left) shows the Bishops round the press hall at Christmas time in 1979. They watch the Crabtree web offset machine roar up to speed producing that weeks edition of the Wigan Observer.
I recognise the Bishop of Warrington, Michael Henshall next to Derrick Smith, but I don't know who the other cleric is.

Correct Rev Long, Micheal Henshell held the post for 20 years, retiring in 1996. Many VIP from all walks of life would be invited to Woods St, there was a certain buzz around the works even though the web offset press and equipment was over 10 years old, it was still a relatively new development for newspapers. Other printing plants were still producing papers by the letter press principle, and the Wigan Observer was one of the first to use this revolutionary printing process since 1966.

It is Mr Carruthers, the vicar of St. James. Wood St.would be in his parish after St. Thomas's closed.
