I think it was situated where the old BHS was, near the Market tavern, but not sure. A cafe occupied upstairs but can't remember the name.
Was it the ROY CAFE?
Its hard to believe this photo was only taken in the 1950's.
Looks like it could have been in Marsden Street, Phil.
think it was The Wishbone
I think the Roy Cafe became the Wishbone at a later date.
Are they the same Reads who lived in Orrell, had lads at UpHolland Secondary School in the early 1970s?
How would you carry one of those ducks(?) home!!! They look like a meal and a half! BTW, is that FURNITURE on the right of the shop? Wow, now thats what I call diversifying! Great pic :)
sheryl I think those Ducks are Turkeys. Did the cafe upstairs become "King Al's Kitchen"?
I think that it must have been taken in December with all the turkeys hanging. The shop to the right of Reeds is the Roy Cafe. My wife and I went for our tea there once before going to the Ritz. Bill Davies had his shop to the left of Reeds. Every morning, a lorry would roll up to Davies loaded with rabbits from N.Wales. They were trapped near Abersoch.
John Noble, a friend of mine at Highfield Junior School in the 1950's, father was manager at the Roy Cafe at in the late 1950's.
Thats Jimmy Read Jnr on the left of the picture. He and his father James Snr. were great friuends of my Dad and Grandfather respectively. I believe they did live in Orrell and probably James Jrns sons did attend the school as suggested as they would be about my age. The Wishbone Cafe above the Fishmongers was very popular in the late 60's/ early 70's before it was all demolished to make way for an extension to the then British Home Stores
The 'furniture' looks suspiciously like game hampers and fish boxes to me.
Thanks for all the comments on this picture, that's my dad,far left, and yes, myself and three brothers all went to Upholland Sec John , James and Martin.
my dad tommy jones used to have a fish stall here with edward atherton, his wife is still in the market hall today. dolly atherton
