Hi colin isnt that Mr Peter Fishwick on the Linotype?
What a gent! ex-fighter pilot at that..who would have thought.
I think it is Terry, Peter (affectionately) known as (Owd Pee by some of the younger staff) tinkled the linotype hot-metal keyboard and later became composing room overseer. He was succeeded by Bob Hodges, who later became the last works manager. Peter's mother also worked in the office as a cleaner, and his son Les, was a compositor who worked mainly with the advertisements in the paper and his son, Bob, became a machine minder.
Yep, I worked alongside Les and then Bob for 10 years. Peter was a Class Act, a real gent. I still have some wartime shirts & collars he gave me ( unused and in bags). Les was a really nice bloke as well...don't know how he pout up with me! He used to say i was (in the Works pecking order)"lower than the works cat!" "in fact, youre that low down, you can under a snakes belly w'i a Top Hat on!"
Hi Colin, Les Fishwick was Peter's Nephew.
Hi Frank its nice to hear from you, thanks for the correction... its great to read the comments of you chaps from the Observer, please keep it going.
Working on the stone with his back to camera isDonald Cornes, formerly organist at an Ince church. The late Derek O'Loughlin is in the background.
