Yes that's how I remember you chaps, sadly Clary (Clarence) passed away some years ago. Clary as he liked to be known (on the left) was very vocal, you could hear him from the other side of the garage. One day we had this six wheel ERF rigid in for MOT *** ***K and the king pins were seized, I held this drift welded to a bar whilst Clary hit them with a sledge hammer... and I mean he hit them, with only inches from my head with every swing, I tasted fear that day.
As you say Wally, this was the first of a few new Daf 2100 rigids for Ashton and they was a success.
yes Colin, Clary was a "make it happen" sort of fellow, a good man to have by your side.
'Clary' was my uncle a great man with a great sense of humour and a legend in New Springs
Yes he was Carl, a big man with an even bigger heart...a great man.
Hi Carl, nice to have a relative of Clary see this picture. Clary and me were good friends but, he was an even bigger friend of my cousin Brian Southern. Brian drove for Haddock's when they had a fleet of vehiles of their own back in the 50s/60s, they had a great looking fleet of Leyland Commets tippers painted in Green and Yellow if I remember right.
Clary also worked for Banks tippers from Hindley, before he joined Kwik Save. I've seen photos of his trucks and they were in mint condition, I think the family firm his father or grandfather founded was based in Reservoir St, Aspull. I think he also had a sister who lived on Withington Lane, Top lock area of New Springs.
Hi Walter, you are right he was friends with Brian.I remember the Haddock Bros haulage firm his dad ran.Initally they were based on Withington street top lock later selling the land to Harveys the bakers and moving further up Aspull
From what I recolect the livery was Green with red over the wheel arches As a little un I used to go out with him on many a run up to Carnforth to collect aggregate from Tilcon together with prince his back dog who went everywhere.
After kwik save he went to work at Gullick Dobson in Ince
Hi Mr Sherburn in Aspull W.S
I think you have got your date wrong on the photo with youself and Clary on. Clary got me on at KS in Aug 1981 then
the colours were black +silver with a red band on the trailers and black wheels. It was the early eightys when the
colours changed to beigh brown as in your photo Geoff Ellis
from Standish painted the first ones because I used to take
them and bring them back .It must be the Yorkshire air Wally
anyway good photo of you and my mate Clary. D.C.
Hi Wally looking young in photo of you and clary. And Colin looks like just left school. So all the best to you all.BYE
After racking my brains back 30 odd years, I think Derricks right about the dates, Wally. Frank Nolan's truck was indeed BDM 162S (1978) but was a Daf 1900(none turbo)rigid body. It was still in the old livery of black cab and silver chassis and more noticeable it had the ribbed alloy body and headlights in the bumper bar. This truck with you and Clary is a Daf 2100 rigid and at a guess think it's KMA 56Y, it's also as the then latest Glassanite body fitted to the chassis by Alloy Bodie's, Miles Platting in Manchester, they would almost certain have painted it aswell. Hello Martin, its nice to hear from you, hope your well.
Hi Derek and Hi Martin, good to hear from you both, yes Derek you are right the date is 1980s my mistake, old age I guess. Funny how time slips away eh ! best wishes to all. Colin, fancy you allowing me to make that mistake !!!.
Yes I was the first female to work here....with Janet as well.1991 Im still driving to this day 23years in all
I remember Clarence well he had a triumph 2000 estate car which had been a write off it had a brand new bodyshell on it all the lads in the garage are fondly remembered
Hi Bernard nice to hear from you are you still working hard
or have become a millionaire yet all the best D.C.
