Great photo.
No less than fourteen former bus operators were merged in 1974, to become Greater Manchester Transport, and they are now represented in the Museum of Transport. Also included is this Wigan Corporation breakdown truck, this vehicle's chassis dates from the second world war, commencing life as a wartime artillery tractor. After the war, the unit was completely rebodied and re-engined for use as a breakdown tender for Wigan Corporation buses.
Market street, Hindley in better days...Well done Tom.
A great photo of Hindley with Douggie Englands chemist shop on the corner.
James McNight, long time Wigan Corporation Transport Manager, used to insist that any vehicle that had broken down should not be towed back to the depot through the town centre - he thought that the councillors should not see it!
my brother in law norman webster was a fitter at wigan depot and used to go out on breakdowns in a truck like this
