Me and Fred was returning from Carnfoth in the summer around 1960. With a BLACK 5 a fast fright for the south of England. On the approach to Lancaster there is a bank, which climbs to a place called Howbech. Fred made engine work hard through Lancster station sending sparks high into the sky.When we stopped at Howbech to let a passenger train go by , a farmer came to Freds side of the engineand said you have set my field on fire,Fred replied i dont think so mate, my sparks have snow on them when they fall ask my fireman.The farmer went away rubbing his head This is how I remember my mate Mr Fred Beechey Brian
