This is the remains of the Great Central Railway Line where it once crossed Darlington St and Warrington Rd. The picture, probably taken in the 1970s,shows a Pub, Foundry, Railway Embankment, Goods Shed, Bakeries and a Supermarket, now all gone.

Hi Winder - great shot, which pub were you referring to btw? I can see the Shepherd Arms (just) is there another?

The pub is the Foundry Inn which is on the corner of Darlington Street and warrington Road.

The supermarket was Kwik Save and I remember it being built as I attended Britannia Bridge Primary School. I was born in 1968 so reckon this pic was taken late 70s. Great memories.

Well done Cliff an excellent picture. I would concur with the late seventies estimate for the photo; a)because the inevitable jungle has not yet appeared on the old track formation, and b)because the trees that "the goons" from the council have planted when another piece of industrial heritage was destroyed for all time (ie the massive central stone pier that supported the two sections of the overbridge)are still quite young. Has anyone got any pictures of the viaduct itself going towards the station? I have only seen one other photo on the site which wasn't the best quality.

Think you may be right Brian.
From about 1980 onwards there was a big catamaran on blocks in the Pepper Mill Yard. It was there for years. No sign of it on this pic.

The local name for the Foundry pub was the "Smoothing Iron" due to the shape of the room - I think
