Laying the foundation stone in April 1915 by the mayor J T Grimshaw, looks like the whole school have turned out to watch. If you can make it out there are three faces peering over the top of the foundation stone, I guess they are the workmen who are really laying the stone.

My Dad, Norman Cunliffe, recently described a VE celebration after WW2. It involved St. George’s boys brigade starting from St. George’s school , going down Greenough Street and then up Standishgate entering the first gate of the school and leaving by the second. He led the procession banging a large drum.
He normally played a kettle drum but had broken his thumb playing rugby.
As people know the gates are still in place.
