I wonder how many of these lads survived WW1. Let's hope they were too young to join up.
Gran: Some of the people responsible for signing up youngsters like these footy players to WW1, were not very particular during the initial selection process. Some of the young volunteers were rejected during initial training because they were unlikely to make good soldiers. Unfortunately some under age lads made it through to the big adventure and a trip to France. What a shock it must have been when they found themselves in the thick of it. I presume the boys from HAGS would have been smart enough and well advised to stay clear, but the outlook on patriotism was very different then.This item reminds me of another local lad named James Hilton, I believe his father was once a teacher in Leigh. James Hilton wrote the book...... Goodbye Mr Chips!
