Teaching the new or delearning the old?

As they said at the time, 'decimal system, what's the point?'

What a 'to-do' at the time- every shop you went in you thought you were being 'diddled' very much like when on holiday abroad!

Reminds me of the class room experience in the classroom many years ago at the Wigan Pier Museum. It was certainly a challenge then, going back to adding up, pounds, shillings, and pence.

After we've left the EU, I think we should go back to pounds shillings and pence. I can just imagine all the kids in school trying to get their heads around it - like we had to.

Decimalisation certainly did create a lot of problems, inflation for one. We used to have to translate all the prices into "proper" money for my Nan for years after. I remember her being scandalised finding a loaf had gone up in price to 2 shillings, (10p), lol.

Remember an elderly lady in Manchester being interviewed on a local TV programme and she was asked if she thought she might find it difficult adjusting to decimalisation. Her reply was "I'm not bothered, all my money is in the bank in old money"

I remember Bill Spencer with affection as a Lay Reader at St George's church. Always a friendly welcome and smile.

Graham. Any relation to the Parkinson brothers, Bill, and Jack. Wigan Borough Police officers. Bill was a superintendent, Jack, I believe became a dog handler.
