Veronica. "What does the shield represent,or have I missed the answer to the question somewhere,?"

Comment by: Veronica on 23rd December 2017 at 16:00

The Shield was kept in the school hall Albert (near the Sacred Heart statue). I know there were engravings put on every year from way back. Every year there was a swimming gala at the baths in Millgate and we had a team that took part against other schools in Wigan. I remember Whelley School taking part mainly. The three girls on the back row were really good swimmers and they were coached so that made a difference I think. I would love to know what happened to it. The Shield must have belonged to the school as it was always in place there.

Wigan Elementary Schools Swimming Association was founded 1899 and they held a Swimming Gala every year according to Google.

Did you hold their towels, Veronica?

Probably the best of a bad bunch- It's the taking part after all. ... And those nuns were 'holy terrors'!

Veronica, is that Patricia (Pat) Harris back row centre?

Comment by: Veronica on 20th November 2023 at 20:01

Yes it is Colin.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 21st November 2023 at 11:30

Veronica, further to our communication on the other album page. Which one would be Margaret Stockley and what was the name of Pat's sister?
Ed mentioned the Harris sisters older brother George, he was indeed a well known ballroom dancer and won many competitions.
He was the talk of the neighbourhood when we learned he was to dance on BBC Television, everyone was glued to their tiny tv's that night.
I wish there were some pictures of him and his partner that could be posted.

I’m not related to the O’Learys Colin. Bu5 I remember there was a family of O’Leary’s that lived in Higham St. The family is in the ‘Family’ section with some photos who I mean.

Thanks Veronica,
Someone once asked if I was related to Megan Trainer, hardly likely!

Peter, thanks for this information, I hope that you find the picture and post it and I am sure there may be a few more in the Wigan Observer archive.
