Thank you Dtease- I still have a slight droop on my left eye. :0))
A much better job than mine, D Tease!
I think it has more to do with Photoshop than me Mick.
DTease & Mick: Well done on the photos nice job, but Veronica needs a little bit more help with her droop. Can any of you lift up her left eyeball.
The two harris sisters on the top row was george harris sisters, george was in my class at st patricks boys school, george became a top ballroom dancer in is lifetime.
Veronica. "What does the shield represent,or have I missed the answer to the question somewhere,?"
The Shield was kept in the school hall Albert (near the Sacred Heart statue). I know there were engravings put on every year from way back. Every year there was a swimming gala at the baths in Millgate and we had a team that took part against other schools in Wigan. I remember Whelley School taking part mainly. The three girls on the back row were really good swimmers and they were coached so that made a difference I think. I would love to know what happened to it. The Shield must have belonged to the school as it was always in place there.
Veronica, it says on the Shield "Elementary Schools Swimming Assoc"
Mmmmm- all I can say Dtease I was abot 12 /13 then and there was 3 classes above me and a few out of every class made up the teams. ( I don't know why I was in it!)
Wigan Elementary Schools Swimming Association was founded 1899 and they held a Swimming Gala every year according to Google.
Did you hold their towels, Veronica?
Probably the best of a bad bunch- It's the taking part after all. ... And those nuns were 'holy terrors'!
Veronica, is that Patricia (Pat) Harris back row centre?
Yes it is Colin.
Veronica, further to our communication on the other album page. Which one would be Margaret Stockley and what was the name of Pat's sister?
Ed mentioned the Harris sisters older brother George, he was indeed a well known ballroom dancer and won many competitions.
He was the talk of the neighbourhood when we learned he was to dance on BBC Television, everyone was glued to their tiny tv's that night.
I wish there were some pictures of him and his partner that could be posted.
Veronica, on the subject of St Patrick's School did you know or are you any relation to anyone by the name of Bernadette or Clifford O'L.................?
If so drop me an email.
Only just seen this Colin. Margaret is on the left on the back row. Pat H is next to her and sister Margaret is on the end.
I’m not related to the O’Learys Colin. Bu5 I remember there was a family of O’Leary’s that lived in Higham St. The family is in the ‘Family’ section with some photos who I mean.
Thanks Veronica,
Someone once asked if I was related to Megan Trainer, hardly likely!
Colin, my wife and i used to compete against George Harris. We have a photo in the people category , Peter Walsh and Alwyn Turner. We have a photo of George somewhere and will post it if we find it.
Peter, thanks for this information, I hope that you find the picture and post it and I am sure there may be a few more in the Wigan Observer archive.
