Hi Dave I used to go to the Comet Youth Club at this school in the late 60's early 70's before they moved it to Poolstock ... happy days watching Man In a Suitcase in the telly room ... playing ping pong ... and drinking nothing stronger than coke ...
I remember the Station Master from Wigan Wallgate lived in the house at the bottom of Gt.George St.shown on the photo.
Dave, do you remember walking crocodile- style, each day,in all weathers, from Caroline St School to Clayton St School for school dinners? After eating. the girls and Infsnts played in the playground closest to the nursery whilst the boys played in the other playground. When everyone had finished eating, we returned to Caroline St for afternoon school.
Clayton St was used for many social gatherings such as Youth Clubs, Barn dances, Harvest Suppers, Domino drives, Whist groups embroidery groups etc. In fact, as youngsters, most of our social life revolved around school and church which I think was the case for most people in Wigan, in those days.
We washed our mucky hands at St.Thomas's,then as you say we marched down to Clayton St.Heaven above knows where some of that meat came from that was on our plates, looked like old donkeys to me.I used to nip home for a jam butty afterwards as we only live around the corner.Ah,yes,I remember it well,Jean.
