The 4th Wigan West (St John's) Guide Company was founded by Miss Ethel Bolton in 1920 Her sister Peggy became brown Owl. Ethel became Mrs Wilkinson and was proprietress of The Baby Shop on Fleet Street in Pemberton from the 1950s to the 1980s. He daughter Janet Brown took over as Guide Captain for this company in the 1960s, after assisting her old school friend Phyl Wigginton, who had been the Guide Captain until she left to have her children. Ethel is sitting in the centre, immediately to the right of the lady in the Maribou trimmed hat!
