There is my mum looking proud and fab in an outfit she made herself....love the hat - david shilling take note.
!!!
Which one is your mum then, because I don't know these lovely ladies.
She is to the left of the photo in the floral dress with the white hat.
Very Stunning Carole.
Where about is this?
I think it maybe the springfield junction with woodhouse lane...perhaps going towards St Andrews church. Wonder what happened to all the great banners? Are they still stored in the church? I think I remember them stored around the side aisles.
I agree with you Carole, regarding the location, just around the corner, near to where you see that road traffic sign, an emergency police box was situated.
looks like the old guardians pub on the left.
The houses on the left, in the distance, with the lamp posts in front - are they now opposite the CO OP?
It is absolutely 50m from the junction of Park Road/ Springfield Road/Woodhouse lane. The two white houses were demolished some years ago. To the right behind the banner the advertising hoarding is on the side of Donovan's shop later to be Wickens. The row of terraced houses to the right had a cobbler's shop on one end, who was a sextant or something at St Andrews and at the other end a second hand furniture shop.
I would say the background of the photo is looking towards the Frog/Woodhouse Lane End. The Co-op would be on the right hand side a tad further down from the white houses on the left. Springfield Road would be to the left of the photo and Park Road would be straight ahead. They must have altered the junction since the photo was taken. Possibly when they installed traffic lights.
All this sparked some reminisences from the family about living in Woodhouse Lane. We lived at no.21 until 1963ish. Can anyone remeber theTop or Bottom Jennnies who owned separate shops on Woodhouse
lane? Other neighbours where the Taulties ( Taughlty's), Mrs Southern, Mrs Deacon, Arnold Davenport, the Highams. Ring any bells?
Just a few more prompts for you Carole D
Bottom Jennies was Ted Green's cloggers , then Gaskells, Mehan's , Gormely's Talties then as you mention upto Jennie's
Carole. Didn't Mr & Mrs Moss live in one of the houses that you can see, on the left hand side?. Harold, their son, served in the Wigan Borough Police, then the G.M.P.
In asking Mum ( now 89) she thinks the clog shop was opposite bottom Jennies was opposite what is now Lads & Dads. We also think top Jennies was Jenny Irving. Can't rme ber about top of Woodhouse Lane as we where nearer Frog Lane end.
The row of terraced houses on the right was where Maurice McElligott used to have his emporium. The last house closest to the junction. The bus stop used to be outside. This junction has been rebuilt several times over the years.
After we moved to STL i had to catch the bus home from St Andrews. No 4 to STL terminus not 4b cause I think that just stopped at Beech Hill. Loved looking on that shop seemed magical, had lots of things I needed to save pocket money for....
Carol do you have a brother I remember a Martin Dawber when growing up in Meadow Street

Did your Dad teach you watch repairing ?
Hi orrellite I can remember all the names you have mentioned the Singletons they emigrated to Australia Pauline Buckley still lives there in her grandmothers house. We moved out in 1959 but my grandmother (Ross)lived there until she died.Your right my dad was a watchmaker as was his dad and grandad they had a shop on the corner of Mesnes Street and Standishgate in the early 1900s. My dad did not want me to follow him into the trade but my cousin Brian was his apprentice but sadly he was the last Farnworth to do that kind of work
Major discussion after I remembered walking to St Andrews up Springfield Rd past a row of shops.Think one was a newsagents/toffe shop used to call in and buy a small tin of licquoice tables. Think they where called 'little imps'? Was there a beer shop shop on the junction corner that filled bottles?
Carol there was an off licence on the corner of Springfield road and Woodhouse lane I used to go with my grandma on a sunday for beer she loved one with her Sunday lunch as I do now, happy days
