I have heard in the past, that a lot of people were sorry to lose the tenancy of them.

My hubby said that the ones at the bottom of Beechill Lane were lovely.

I think there are only three locations in Wigan with prefab council houses, Whelley, Abram and Hindley. Don't know any other places.

We lived in one for 18 months when I was a Curate in Liverpool - compared with the 1920s Council House we'd had before, it was luxury. It was light, spacious - and warm - it had 'central' heating... the living-rom fire had a back boiler which heated a radiator in the kitchen on the other side of the wall. That was luxury in those days!

I can remember, Prefabs in Standish built in the late 40's early 50's off Wigan road opposite what is now Victoria Crescent. When I walked through that area a couple of months ago it was all modern housing leading out to Grove Lane. I'm sure other Standish folk can remember them at that time. As kids, we used to cut through the pathway by them on the way to Ashfield. They are shown on old maps from the late 40's as a small group of buildings. The Trolley Bus Museum at Sandoft near Doncaster has one that you can go through.

There were also a few in Appley Bridge on Stoneygate lane. On the right as you approached Fairy Glen.
