Lets stick with the snow theme, this time a view of Upholland in the snow taken by Harry Parkes in December 1903. The sender of this postcard has dated it 20th of January 1904, and it was written by Beatrice Wilcock from ‘Sea View House’ in Upholland, didn’t know you could see the sea from there!

Sea View House is on Pimbo Lane Allan, on the far side of the hill, looking towards the coast.

Comment by: Mick on 21st July 2013 at 19:01

Correction - Chequer Lane, not Pimbo!

Looks like Abbey Lakes pub on the left and Thomas the Martyr church in the distance.
Good pic, Alan.

An excellent pic. The white building that can be seen between the Abbey Lakes Hotel and the nearest telegraph pole is the old mill house, long demolished.
The building with double gables which can be seen on the hillside, just to the left of the church tower, is the old infants school, demolished circa 1966.

I was always told you could see the sea at Southport from Ashurst Beacon..on a clear day...I never did !

Allan
This is a wonderful photo and if I may I will have a 'Lizzie down under' moment and copy it for my Family History Records.
Cheers Lizzie!

Sure that is Abbey Lakes pub on the left. Any more information?

Comment by: Mick on 22nd July 2013 at 17:32

Definitely the Abbey Lakes pub, Jezza. It was built in 1879, twenty five years before this photo was taken.
The lodge and gates to the Abbey Lakes pleasure grounds can be seen to the immediate right of the pub.

Helen, sometimes on a clear day, you can't even see, the sea, from Southport!

Comment by: Mick on 23rd July 2013 at 14:03

Trams to Abbey Lakes started in 1906, Orrellite.

The lodge can be seen on the photos below Tricia, but I'm sure there are better photos somewhere in the Wigan World albums.
