This is an old photo approx 1953 and showing all present and correct at Top Lock in terms of pubs.
Taken from Cale Lane canal bridge the houses after the Kirkless are still there as is the Top Lock Inn and the brick tower of an old coal pit on the opposite bank of the canal.
The treeless wutchey looms in the haze like a proper slag heap.

dk,,what memories,,spent many happy hours around here indeed honed my swimming in the canel round that lock ,,have jumped and dove off that wooden footbride more times than i care to remember(un thinkable in todays health and safety controlled world we live in)but judging what appears to be snow on the ground i would guess ,wouldnt be swimming at the time pic was taken,,will share more memmories of those times on another day,,can feel the nostalgia welling up inside,,,
