Opening night on Valentine's day 1956 for the Wellfield Hotel, a celebration that this was a large investment for the Greenall Whitley Brewery and that this was the first new pub to be built in Wigan for 50 years.
The town's mayor, civic dignitaries and Brewery representatives were present and enjoyed a free first hour's drinking, it wasn't a surprise to find a number of taxis had to be summoned to take a few of the delegation home early.

The tall man at the back, with the dark hair, standing in front of the gap in the curtains: Is that Paul Foster, who was Chief Constable of the Borough Police Force?

Just to add a few names and extra details, extreme left is the Mayor Harry Roger Hancock (period of office was May 1955 to May 1956) and on the far right, the gentleman holding up a wine glass is __? Taylor, a Wigan RL director, the person "escaping" to the extreme right of the photo is a journalist and I believe the man in the centre of the photo is Greenall Whitley's main representative on the night.

Does anyone remember George Ludbrook, he would pick up 3 or 4 bottles of Guiness from the "Offy" every night and drop off the empties for his 3p refund. Lovely man and lived at Hazell Ave ,Beech Hill
