Although the canon brigade would beg to differ
A lot depends what you want out of your photography, if its just for snapping things here and there the cool pix is a good camera
If you want to get serious about it, your better off paying a little extra and getting an SLR be it Nikon or Canon
That way you can add lenses and the like to it
