Always use a sharp craft knife! Actually if you look up "your model railway club" and or "Rmweb" they are both excellent model railway forums. The former has a complete section devoted to various forms of kit building including a thread specifically for scalescenes that includes a three part series written by one of the members with tips, methods do's and donts. It's not that i dont want to give you any tips but i think that that is the best one I can give you.
Also on the rmweb site in amongst the layout topics there is a topic on my Wigan Wallgate layout that has input from several Wigan based or born and bred modellers. There is also a topic
By an expat wiganer in NZ who is starting a 21st century version of Wallgate.
Both of these sites are well worth browsing through, there is a whole range of topics, tips, layouts etc
