Yes, I agree with you in respect of aesthetics in relation to the pre-war signal boxes.

Like yourself, I too think the road surface in the coal yard to have been granite setts (would have been originally laid out for horse-drawn vehicles) but have to admit that I know not if my visual image of them be a true memory, or a reconstruction.
