Although I come from a coalmining family and lived through the strike, I never really understood the Thatcher/Scargill thing that was going on. I've just been reading through loads of stuff and have come to the conclusion that as much as Thatcher was to blame for the demise of the working classes, Scargill did the miners no favours by calling a strike without a ballot which led to a division within the miners and mining communities, and weakened their position against Thatcher. Have I understood this correctly? This isn't a political argument, just trying to understand what went on.....
