I think the play offs should be weighted heavily in the favour of the team that finishes third. Here is how it should be done, all one off games, extra time, penalties.
5th to play 6th. (fifth at home).
Winner to play 4th. (fourth at home).
Winner to play 3rd. (third at home).

The team finishing 3rd can end up 10-12 points ahead of the 6th place team, which is why the play-offs should favour them. So the higher you finish in the play offs, the more advantage you should get.
