St Patrick's school was established by 1848 but the children were taught in the original church building. The foundation stone for the original school building was laid on St Patrick's day 1856. This building stood on the junction of Hardybutts and what would become Rupert Street. This building was demolished in 1927 to make way for the girl's school. When the present St Patrick's church was opened in 1880 the original church building was used as a school, this continued for the next eighty nine years.
