There was a Hugh Holme who lived at Holland House (now Holland Hall) who married Anne Bankes in 1731. Anne was the sister of William Bankes of Winstanley Hall. Hugh Holme helped supervise work on making the River Douglas navigatable from Wigan, along with the Bankes' and other colliery owners. It took most of the 1730's to complete.
